TheFederation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA) is a consortium of twelve Chinese professional associations in Australia. One of its objectives is to promote and further bilateral links and cooperation between Australia and China in science, technology, engineering services and education. Following the 1stAustralia–China Symposium successfully held at Sydney in August 2006, the 2ndAustralia-China Symposiumwill be held at Gold Coast in October 2008 aiming to bring together 200 participants among whom many are eminent experts and scholars from both Australia and China.
Aims: The aims of the 2nd Symposium are:
To further the bilateral understanding of some highly important issues concerning both countries
To facilitate more fruitful collaboration and cooperation in alldisciplines of science,technology and education between Australia and China, by providing a forum for exchange of ideas and networking among representatives from governments, academia, industrial and research organizations, and
To report and review the latest developments and progresses in the areas of interest through the invited keynote addresses and selected presentations.
Scope: The symposium will focus on some of the strategic topics of interest to both countries, such as technology commercialisation, clean coal technology, renewable energy, climate change response and mitigation, and future education.
In addition to these key topics that will be scheduled in the plenary sessions or keynote addresses, the symposium will also cover a series of oral presentations or posters in the following areas:
The official language of the conference is English. Interested participants are welcome to submit abstracts (300 words) related to any of the above areas to the Symposium Local Organizing Committee Secretary Dr Yonghong Wang via email: yonghong.wang@csiro.au by COB 31 August 2008 (to be included in the Symposium Proceedings). Abstract submission form can be downloaded here.
The Organising Committee will produce a Symposium Proceedingsfor all accepted papers and posters, while some of the selected papers in the relevant sessions may be published as special issues of international journals subject to the normal peer reviewing process.

Normal registration until conference date: A$500 (A$250 for students).
Registration fees include a copy of the Proceedings of the Symposium Abstracts, Morning and Afternoon Teas, Hot Buffet Lunch for the two day Symposium, and formal conference dinner on 16th Oct 2008.

With ever-increasing trade and economic cooperation between Australia and China in recent years, there has been a rapid growth in bilateral exchanges and collaboration in scientific research and development, technology transfer, engineering and consultancy projects. Australia’s education market in China has also experienced a phenomenal growth in the last decade. To further the bilateral understanding and facilitate more fruitful cooperation in these areas, the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA) is delighted to announce the 2nd Australia-China Symposium on Science, Technology and Education to be held during 15-18 October 2008, Gold Coast, Australia. The 1st Australia–China Symposium was successfully held during 12-13 August 2006, Sydney, Australia, which brought together more than 140 participants from Australian and Chinese industries, academies and research organizations. It was chaired by Professor Max Lu (FTSE and Federation Fellow with the University of Queensland), the then President of FOCSA, with many distinguished scientists and educators from both countries attending and speaking at the Symposium. They included Professor David de Kretser, Governor of the State of Victoria, Mr Jungao Zhang, Minister Counsellor and Charge de’affairs, Embassy of The People’s Republic of China in Australia; Professor Dianzuo Wang, Senior Vice President, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Dr John Zillman FTSE FAA, President of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
The 2nd Australia-China Symposium is to build on the success of the first one, with focuses on technology commercialisation, clean coal technology, renewable energy and climate change response. It is chaired by Professor Aibing Yu, FTSE, President of FOCSA and Scientia Professor at University of New South Wales, together with Professor Zhihong Xu as Co-Chair (Director, Centre for Forestry and Horticultural Research, Griffith University and Standing Vice President of FOCSA).
