Preface

On behalf of the organising committee, we would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of you, speakers and participants at the first Australia-China Symposium on Science, Technology and Education (August 12-13, 2006) in the beautiful city of Sydney.

The aims of this symposium are to further the bilateral understanding and facilitate more fruitful cooperation in all disciplines of science, technology and education between the two countries, by providing a forum for exchange of ideas and networking among representatives from governments, academia, industrial and research organizations. This symposium is an initiative of the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA). FOCSA is a non-profit organization that aims to promote bilateral linkages and cooperation between Australia and China in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering Services and Education (http://www.focsa.org.au).

With ever-increasing trade and economic cooperation between Australia and China in recent years, there has been a rapid growth in bilateral exchanges and collaboration in scientific research and development, technology transfer, and engineering services. Australia’s education market in China has also experienced a phenomenal growth during the last decade. According to the Australian government’s data, the total number of Chinese students enrolled in Australian universities was 81,000 in 2005 including 24,000 in sciences and technology, and over 15,000 postgraduate students. In Australia, there are over 20,000 highly qualified professionals from Chinese background working in governmental departments, CSIRO, universities and industries. Chinese scholars in Australia have played and continue to play an active role and make significant contributions to the Australian education and innovation systems, as well as acting as bridges for the ever important relationship between our two countries. Many of them have attended this symposium.

This symposium brings together more than 140 delegates including 63 speakers representing Australian and Chinese industries, academies, research organizations, and the higher education sectors. The subject topics of the plenary and invited talks include ‘Education and Technology Cooperation, Sustainable Development and Environment, Resources and Energy, Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Information Technology, Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology’. All of these topics are highly relevant and significant for both countries. We hope that the exchange and interactions at this symposium will further strengthen our education, science and technology linkages of the two countries. We believe that this symposium and the subsequent collaborations will contribute significantly to our shared vision for common prosperity, harmonious society and sustainable development.

The symposium has received outstanding support from government agencies, universities, industries and academies from both countries. We would like to take this opportunity to express our great gratitude to all the sponsors that have been listed in this program booklet for their generous support; without their support the symposium would not have been possible. A successful conference is also a good example of great team work. We would like to thank all colleagues on the organising committee and the local organising committee for their dedicated hard work for this symposium. We are also thankful to the members of the Advisory Board for their encouragement and support. Finally, we would like to wish all delegates have an enjoyable and fruitful symposium, and wish our colleagues and guests from China a very pleasant stay and enjoyable experience in Sydney and beyond.
